At Hungerford, our teaching of music develops children's ability to listen, appreciate varied musical styles and to give their personal opinions and reactions to different pieces of music. Children are given the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of percussion instruments as well as develop their singing voice.
All children are taught singing and take part in several choral performances throughout the year, such as Christmas productions and regular performances in our community. At the end of the academic year, Year 6 put on a musical extravaganza: this year’s highlight was a selection of scenes and songs from Goodbye My Friend.
Pupils are given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument (including piano, trumpet and trombone) from Year 3 onwards. All children in Year 4 learn the recorder.
We have an upper School Choir (years 5 and 6) who take part in a variety of musical performances during the school year. For the second year running we have taken part in the Islington Pure Voices concert held at the Union Chapel. The singing club is now established for years 1 and 2 and we look forward to it continuing to grow next year!
The school has established and continues to develop close links with the local community. In addition to public carol singing in order to raise money, we also entertain the residents of Minerva Lodge. Along with regular concerts, these give the children the opportunity to perform in a wide range of settings. www.singup.org
